Temporary vs permanent office contracts in Germany

What Befristung means for administrative roles, how to read contract length in postings, and questions worth asking before you accept.

Many administrative openings are befristet — limited to a project, parental-leave cover, or budget cycle. That is not automatically a poor outcome, but it should be a conscious choice.

Why offices use fixed terms

Coverage for leave, grant-funded projects, and seasonal peaks all create temporary Assistenz and Empfang needs. Permanent roles still exist, especially where continuity of filing and stakeholder relationships matters.

Reading the posting

Look for Dauer, Befristung, and whether Verlängerung is mentioned. Ask in the interview how often similar contracts have been extended historically — you want a factual answer, not a promise.

Planning your search

If you need stability within six months (housing, family scheduling), weight permanent and longer fixed terms higher in your weekly plan. If you need recent German office experience on your CV, a well-chosen temporary role can bridge a gap.

Consulting boundary

We explain how to evaluate offers in career conversations; we do not provide legal review of employment contracts. For clause-level advice, speak with a qualified counsellor or attorney.

Bring contract questions into an administrative career consultation if you are weighing two administrative offers with different durations.
